Iceland has equipped the majority of its national screen base with a non-etching subtitling system, reducing costs for exhibitors and distributors and widening the potential diversity of films shown in Iceland. The major exhibitors in Iceland--Sam Film , Skifan and Myndform, covering 32 screens--have invested in Dolby ScreenTalk, which allows distributors to consider screening films that have no dedicated foreign-langauge film print.
* ScreenTalk is a superimposed subtitling system, which reduces the cost and time of providing subtitles to audience, an essential fact of life in many non-English language territories. The system was developed by Dolby in association with Screen Associates and works by superimposing colour subtitles over the main film picture using a conventional video projector. The distributor provides the subtitles electronically via CD-ROM or the internet, which can then be projected in synchronisation with a conventional 35mm film print. The system is royalty-free.
